Minor allergen

An allergenic protein that has been found to be clinically significant in a minority of patients allergic to that particular allergen (<50%). While less relevant to a population, minor allergens may still be important to patients sensitized to them.

Major allergen

An allergenic protein that has been found to be clinically significant in over 50% of a population of patients allergic to that particular allergen. Major allergens have been characterized for a number of allergenic species. Common examples of major allergens include: Amb a 1 (Ragweed), Fel d 1 (Cat), Phl p 5 (Timothy grass), etc. Characterization of major allergens has not been completed for a number of allergenic species.

Maintenance

The highest dose to be achieved during a course of allergy immunotherapy. Maintenance is preceded by the build-up phase of immunotherapy, during which a patient is injected with increasing concentrations of allergens to which he/she is sensitized. Maintenance dosing is maintained, typically, for 3-5 years.
