In vivo

“In life.” Refers to testing directly on, or in the patient (e.g. skin prick test).

In vitro

“In glass.” Refers to testing performed in a test tube or generally any laboratory test not done within living organisms (e.g. blood test).

IgE

Immunoglobulin E. The least prevalent antibody in human circulation. IgE is involved in recognition of parasites, such as intestinal worms, and is responsible for the allergic (Type I hyperactivity) response upon allergen exposure. IgE is created and released by plasma B cells.
