Build-up

The initial phase of allergy immunotherapy, during which, the patient is gradually exposed to increasing concentrations of allergen. The frequency of injection varies by practice and patient. The goal of allergy immunotherapy is to reach the maintenance phase, following build-up. Maintenance is the dose at which a patient is maintained for the duration of therapy.

BAU

BAU, Bioequivalent Allergy Unit. A potency unit used to characterize biological activity of select standardized allergen extracts. BAU was defined using skin prick test titrations in a sensitized patient population. Reference standards were then established by the FDA and utilized by extract manufacturers to maintain the defined relative potency for the specific, standardized extract. This standardization process reduces variability in potency from lot to lot. Standardized grass (e.g., Timothy, Sweet Vernal, Bermuda, etc.) and cat are labelled as BAU extracts.

Batch

In manufacturing, a batch refers to all units of a product produced under the same conditions (date, raw materials, methods, etc). A batch or lot number is assigned to each of these units, allowing traceability.
